Climate Adaptations

RIVER DWELLING, SPRING '18

Jungle Gym

Two larger modules, one for public activity, one for private, shift between an axis of inhabitation, of circulation, wind and water. As one navigates through the structure, wind is funneled along the northeast and southwest axis of the monsoon climate in the Loboc River of the Philippines. The spinal paths of exposed circulation, rise and sink between the modules of inhabitation. While the structure’s entirety is suspended by a spine of stilted systems, each cavity contains a machine that inhabits the space, leaving the ghost of its path and possible orientations in the surrounding spaces. The instrument directly relates horizontal fluctuation to a specific angle increment, which adapts to spatial requirements, the resistance of wind force, and the guidance of rain collection. As the machine within the cavity shifts, the mechanism extends vertically between the levels, developing a public awareness of movement in other areas of the system.
